Petoskey KOA Cabins and RV Resort
Petoskey, Michigan

What a nice campground this is! It was billed as a 5-star camping resort, and it deserves every star. Even after our KOA membership discount, at $53/night this is the second most expensive place we've stayed (second only to staying right outside NYC). But it is gorgeous. Here are a couple pictures:

I'm not really doing justice to the place, though. There are flowers planted at the intersections, paths leading to little cabins tucked into little woodsy spots, a pool and playground and rec hall all very nice. Lots of kids for Katie to play with (here she is with her newest friend, Brianna). This morning we had a pancake breakfast in the rec hall with Brianna's folks, and chatted with them about travelling. They've recommended we go see the Dalles (sp?) when we are in Wisconsin, so we'll go check that out.

The town of Petoskey has these huge Victorian houses (maybe summer cottages for the rich), and most of them bedecked with flags for the 4th of July:

The one with the huge flag is a college building, but everyone was flying at least one flag, many were flying two or three different ones, college ones, US flags, and some I didn't recognize, maybe local ones. It really got me in the mood for the 4th, and I discovered that "snakes" and sparklers are legal here, so we've stocked up for the holiday.

We are still on Lake Michigan up here, after driving all day from Holland, which was also on Lake Michigan. I guess it's a pretty big lake!

Mark finished his submittal (yea!) and, since we have cable TV for a change, he watched the Tour de France on Saturday. I worked on a little quilt for Katie to play with, made from some of her 3T clothes and bibs. It's turning out cute; I'll take a picture when it's done.

Today (Sunday) we leave for Fisherman's Island State Park, where we will stay in our most primitive site yet (no electricity or water). I hope they let us use fireworks, because I was able to buy sparklers and snaps and even snakes (I haven't used those since I was a kid--they're illegal in Ca, as are sparklers).

No doubt there will be no uploading out there, but we're only there for a couple days, then we head north to Mackinaw Island and the Upper Peninsula.

Michigan is pretty, green and nice. I'm glad we were able to come back through it after Chicago and see more of it.
