Point Arena
Rollerville Junction
September 3, 2004

Got into camp late after dinner in Sea Ranch, and Katie slept in until 7:30am (a near record for her).

September 4
Toured the Point Arena Lighthouse (built in 1870, fell down in 1906 SF earthquake, rebuilt in 1911, decommissioned in 1977). They let folks go all the way up to the lens room, which was tiny but the Fresnell lens (the biggest they made) was so beautiful. Once again Katie walked up and down all the stairs by herself. The railing bars were so far apart, though, that I was glad when she was back on the bottom again.

Here are pictures of the Point Arena Lighthouse

Point Arena Lighthouse. At six stories high, one of the taller ones in California

I wanted to show so many pictures of the light coming through this beautiful lens.

Here is the view looking south from the lens room (note the window panes). The Fresnell lens concentrates the sun light coming into the room during the day so much that it will burn the wiring to the apparatus, so a canvas curtain is always pulled accross these window panes.
